Art teaching philosophy statement:
My philosophy of teaching art is grounded in my belief that art and creativity are inherent and essential to human learning and development. My teaching is focused on hands-on learning, material exploration, and inquiry-based art practices. I position myself in a pedagogy of care, in which art is an essential component to the development and expression of a young person. Through my teaching, I promote inquiry-based learning, collaboration, material exploration and play, environment and materials as teachers. The classroom culture of students and teachers is treated as a collaborative and reciprocal community of learners. I aim to share artmaking as a practice of creative problem-solving, inquiry, and a physical connection to materials and our surrounding environments. This process involves engaging with materials, expressing ideas and concepts, and developing a visual language. Technical skill building becomes vehicle for conceptual thinking. Teaching is a form of community care, where I cultivate and create spaces that encourages creative and divergent thinking, ultimately caring for our communities. I incorporate ideas about place, history, environment, and nature into my art practices, and I see my teaching as an integral part of my own creative practice.
